NORTHERN MIDLANDS COUNCIL
We won a design competition for extensions to the Northern Midlands Council Chambers with a proposal to add the additional required space by inserting a new floor within the existing volume under the original roof, keeping the external facades completely intact, and thus achieving the constraints of a very frugal budget.
As well as creating extra floor space, the renovations included a new interior entry lobby in the form of a cylinder shaped internal atrium. The internal side of the new walls were completely clad with panels faced with discarded merino leather, fashioned by leather sculptor Garry Greenwood to symbolise the surrounding rural environment.
The Council Chambers was formerly the Longford Courthouse, and the council chamber / courtroom was restored as part of the works.
The internal conversion won two architectural awards simultaneously in different categories, the first time in Tasmania that a single architectural project had been so honoured.
