MAWSONS HUT REPLICA
The museum is a boutique, world class museum providing visitors with the opportunity to learn and understand the history and achievements of the men of the 1910 Australasian Antarctic Expedition led by Douglas Mawson.
The museum promotes awareness of Australia's involvement in the Antarctic and highlights Hobart as the gateway to the Antarctic continent for the Asia Pacific region.
Having defied over a century of the worlds most fierce wind at sea level the original hut still stands today, clinging to the edge of the vast ice sheet of the polar plateau in Commonwealth Bay, East Antarctica.
The huts are regarded as the birthplace of Australia's Antarctic heritage and hold a unique place in Australian history. They are of nation and international significance, being only one of six remaining sites form the 'heroic era' of Antarctic exploration (1898 to 1896) and are also the only surviving site from an Australian Antarctic expedition from that period.
Situated on land generously provided by the Hobart City Council (HCC), the Replica Museum was constructed off site in three sections and transported to site and bolted together.
